Located south of the Great Smoky Mountain NP, at the southern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, is a place called the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.
Named after Joyce Kilmer, a soldier during World War I, who wrote the poem Trees, it is the only old growth forest east of the Mississippi. In the 1800’s every part of the Appalachian Mountains was being logged and the land was being laid bare. Not in Joyce Kilmer, a special place, in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
